Over the years, we have had the opportunity to introduce numerous men and women to the sport of fly fishing through our Fly Fishing 101 class. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we only scratch the surface on many of the topics discussed, so we are taking things to the next level in this lecture series. Whether you are just getting started, or an experienced fly fisherman, come be a part of the discussion.

Packs, Nets, Waders, Boots and Steelhead Fishing on the American River. 6:00-8:00 pm (2 hours)
Join your Bayside Adventure Sports fly fishing instructors for a discussion on packs, nets, waders and boots. Topics will include finding the best fishing pack to fit not only your style of fishing but your personality as well, fish friendly nets, buying the right sized waders, “wet wading”, boot options and sole materials. And, as a “Fishmas” gift to you, we will discuss fly fishing for steelhead on the American River. Topics will include rigging, fly selection, selecting the right water, and presentation. If you are new to fly fishing, come to learn; if you are an experienced fly fisherman, bring your gear and be part of the discussion.

Fly rods, Reels and Fly lines
6:00-7:30pm (1.5 hours)
Join your Bayside Adventure Sports fly fishing instructors for a discussion on fly rods, reels, and fly lines. Topics will include how fly rods differ from conventional fishing poles, what rods are best suited for the species of fish you are most interested in, suggestions on purchasing your first fly rod, matching your fly rod with the most appropriately-sized fly reel and fly line selection. If you are new to fly fishing, come to learn; if you are an experienced fly fisherman, bring your gear and be part of the discussion.

Fly Selection, Must Have Accessories and Tools
6:00-7:30 pm (1.5 hours)
Join your Bayside Adventure Sports fly fishing instructors for a discussion on the various types of flies, as well as recommendations on the “top 10” must-have flies for your box. What accessories do I really need? Nippers, forceps, floatant, tippet, we will discuss them all in addition to answering the question, what is the staff of life? If you are new to fly fishing, come to learn; if you are an experienced fly fisherman, bring your gear and be part of the discussion.

Basic and Advanced Rigging Techniques
6:00-7:30 pm (1.5 hours)
Join your Bayside Adventure Sports fly fishing instructors for a discussion on rigging your fly rod, aka putting flies on your line. Dry flies, nymphs, dry-dropper, drop shotting, euro nymphing. If some of these terms are foreign to you, then this class is for you. We will start off with the basic setups and move on to some of the more complex combinations. An understanding of some of the basic knots, clinch and triple surgeons, will be helpful. If you are new to fly fishing, come to learn; if you are an experienced fly fisherman, come be part of the discussion.

Mark Schaller
Mark is a retired Police Officer and avid fly fisherman. He has experience as an equipment specialist with Orvis and he has taught hundreds of people how to fly fish through their Fly Fishing 101 program. Most recently (2019) Mark hosted one of our “Epic Adventures”, a one-week fly fishing excursion to Montana. |
Dave Pringle
Dave has been involved in various aspects of Bayside Adventure Sports fishing venues for close to a decade. He has vast experience in fishing for numerous freshwater species through various methods but is partial to the solitude and challenge fly fishing presents. His fly fishing experience spans 30 years. |
