Why An Adventure Sports Ministry

OUR MISSION: To use Adventure Sports to Attract and Attach people to Jesus Christ and His church in the following ways:
Picture

To provide Christians an active place to connect

HAVE FUN
  • Relationships are more easily formed and strengthened through activities based on common interests.
CONNECT
  • Men who have a difficult time connecting in traditional church environments connect well with others while participating in activities they enjoy.
DEEPEN FRIENDSHIPS
  • Physical exercise and challenge bonds people together promoting laughter, serving of one another, the building of memories, common language, trusting of one-another, and a non-threatening environment that encourages transparency.
BE WITH OTHER CHRISTIANS
  • Accomplishing shared goals & challenges like climbing Half Dome or riding a Century brings a camaraderie and bond to groups.
  • A family that accomplishes a challenge experiences a new adventure will forever mark a moment in time that will be a highlight to relive over and over. These experiences will also become a mental goal for the children to duplicate with their own families in the future.

To reach the Adventure Enthusiasts for Christ

ALTER NEGATIVE PERCEPTIONS ABOUT CHRISTIANITY
  • Because of either a negative past experience or a perception based on mass media exposure, the average non-Christian perceives Christians to be sedentary, boring, legalistic, and strange people with whom they have very little in common.
MEET ADVENTURE ENTHUSIASTS FOR CHRIST
  • When a non-Christian adventure enthusiast hears about BAS, it immediately conflicts with his paradigm or perception. When he meets and participates with BAS people and finds them to be full of life, intelligent, purpose driven, authentic, non-judgmental, and genuinely friendly, we hope it creates an opportunity for that person to reconsider the relevance that Jesus Christ might have for their own life.
CONNECT WITH NON-CHRISTIANS
  • BAS is connected to Bayside Church and the leaders have confidence in the appeal of the church services to non-Christians, BAS participants can focus on building friendships with non-Christians and then, when the visitor's perception of Christianity is challenged, inviting them to visit their church and have their paradigm completely altered, thereby opening an opportunity for them to consider Christianity as a foundation for their own life.

To get individuals and families outdoors and active

HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE
  • In his researched based book, "Last Child in the Woods", author Richard Louv quotes, "Based on previous studies, we can definitely say that the best predictor of preschool children's physical activity is simply being outdoors, and that an indoor, sedentary childhood is linked to mental-health problems."
  • From 1997 to 2003, there was a decline of 50 percent in the proportion of children nine to twelve who spent time in such outside activities as hiking, walking, fishing, beach play, and gardening, according to a study by Sandra Hofferth at the University of Maryland. Also, Hofferth reports that children's free play and discretionary time in a typical week declined a total of nine hours over a twenty-five-year period.
GET KIDS OUTDOORS
  • Our Access 2 Adventure program is specifically focused on, starting with junior high age students, getting kids outdoors and active. Week long summer camps and day trips are offered with Christian based outdoor programming combined with rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, canyoning, white water rafting, and more.
FOCUS ON FAMILY
  • A Family Focused ministry, BAS provides educational classes and activities to help families start getting outside while their children are young.
