Ramsey fell in love with the outdoors camping as a child with his father in Virginia. Inspired by his love for aviation, he joined Civil Air Patrol when he was 15. By the time he was 17, he was certified as a Ground Search and Rescue Team Leader and served on the Hawk Mountain staff through into early adulthood. In 1992, he earned the prestigious Expert Ranger Award (one of less than 300 awarded over the 1960s). Ramsey is a retired Air Force pilot with over 5000 hours in various aircraft. During his career he has attended the US Air Force Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) Course and is trained in Self-Aid/Buddy Care (Combat First Aid).
He continues to be an avid outdoorsman with BAS, serving as the Hiking Division Leader from 2007-2012 where he organized multiple mountain climbing trips including summits of Mt Whitney (California, 2008), Mt Kilimanjaro (Africa, 2010) and most recently the Grand Teton (Wyoming, 2011). Ramsey also volunteers as a Search and Rescue pilot for Civil Air Patrol.
